Basic Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to apply for community housing you must meet all of these criteria:
- Be a South Australian resident
- Meet the income and asset limits
- Be at least 16 years old
- Not own or part own any residential property
To look at the Government information on eligibility for community housing click on the link below to take you to the relevant area of the sa.gov.au website.
What if I have Special Circumstances?
If you don’t meet the basic eligibility criteria but believe you have special circumstances you may still be able to register for community housing. You will need to demonstrate the special circumstances that are to be taken into consideration. These are generally issues that restrict you from other housing options – e.g. renting privately.
You may be asked to attend a housing needs assessment interview or provide a letter of support to assess your situation and identify any specific needs you may have.
How do I register my interest?
If you would like to be considered for any of our housing options you need to complete and return our application pack to us, along with other documentation required. The application pack includes a Community Housing registration checklist which provides detail of what other documents you will need to provide, Click on the link below to access the application pack.
Westside’s application pack includes:
- Community Housing registration checklist
- Registration of interest form
- Housing needs assessment form
- Client risk assessment form
If you are unable to print the application pack, please contact us on (08) 8155 6070 to have a pack posted to you.
Please note: Westside cannot process your application until all the relevant information is provided.
What happens once I register my interest?
After we receive your completed application pack and all require supporting documents, we will enter your details on to the Community Housing Customer Register (CHCR). Once you are registered on the CHCR, your details are available to other community housing providers in South Australia. This means you could be housed by a different community housing provider, not Westside, if a house becomes available and you meet the eligibility requirements.
Based on the information you provide in your housing needs assessment form you will be assigned a category of housing need, category 1, 2 or 3, (with category 1 being the highest).
After you have been registered, a confirmation letter will be sent to you, or your nominated contact or support worker confirming your registration number and housing need category.
If your circumstances change after you are registered, it is your responsibility to let us know. Any changes to your registration must be provide to us in writing on the Change of Circumstance form below.
Westside can access your information from the Community Housing Customer Register if a suitable property becomes available for which you are eligible.
Please note: Demand for community housing far exceeds the number of houses that community housing providers have available. This means that waiting times for available housing can vary and can often take a long time. This can be the case even if you have special circumstances.
